Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
This long-standing tradition was continued by writer-traveller Bruce Chatwin who used to buy his moleskines at an old Paris stationery shop in Rue de l'Ancienne Comedie where he would always stock up before embarking on one of his journeys. Over the years he had developed a veritable ritual. Before using them he would in fact number the pages, writing on the inside his name and at least two addresses across the world, and a message promising a reward for anyone finding and returning the notebook in case of it being lost. He even suggested this method to his friend Luis Sepulveda, when he gave him a precious moleskine as a present for a journey they were planning to undertake together in Patagonia. And there was no doubt as to how precious it was, given that at the time even the last moleskine manufacturer, a small family-run firm of Tours, had discontinued production in 1986. 'Le vrai moleskine n'est plus' was the short and curt statement of the owner of the stationery shop where Chatwin had ordered one hundred before leaving for Australia. Despite having literally swept up all the Moleskines he could find, they were not enough. Now, the moleskine is back again. This silent and discreet keeper of an extraordinary tradition, which has been missing for years, has set out again on its journey. A witness to contemporary nomadism, it can once again pass from one pocket to another to continue the adventure. The sequel still waits to be written and its blank pages are ready to tell the story.

5 out of 5 stars I drank the Kool-Aid   September 13, 2008

I always wondered what the draw to moleskine was all about. Now I know. This thing is simple, elegant, handy, understated. Its a waste to use this as you would a $1.99 note book from Wal-Mart. There is a ton of information out there about using the moleskine in a GTD (Getting Things Done, by David Allen) system. This is an absolute lifesaver.

The notebook I ordered was in perfect condition upon arrival. I couldn't wait for it to get here after I ordered it, but it took me more than a week to start writing in it because I is just such a wonderful book that I couldn't bring myself to "degrade" it. :) Well I did finally.

If you are looking for a simple, elegant, "easy to have at all times" notebook, this is the one for you!

2 out of 5 stars Nice design. Binding broke with two month's of use   June 29, 2008

Like so many reviewers, I was extremely happy to find this product. I needed durable notebooks. When I received the Moleskine Small Ruled Notebooks I was very pleased with the design, look, and feel. The paper quality is good. I find it easy to write in.

However, after just three months of use the binding began to break on one notebook. It pulled away from the spine and began to tear. Duct tape has saved it for now, but I am disappointed with the durability.

The notebook lives in my locker at the gym. The notebook it replaced had been living a similar life for about five years with no such problem (it was a log book designed for outdoor scientific observations, but I couldn't find a replacement on-line).

Perhaps I got a lemon, but I do know that the next time I visit a good University book store, I am going to seek out a quality lab notebook.

This notebook is compact, yet it allows you to carry receipts and papers from a days meeting inside and the elastic keeps the additional paper safe from falling out. It's very compact and not overly large for taking to meetings.

5 out of 5 stars Almost my best friend   April 9, 2008

Summary of my Moleskine experience:

I carry my Moleskine with me absolutely everywhere, and it's taken some abuse: it's been thrown in my backpack, dropped on the ground, stuck underneath heavy objects, dragged through the forest, tossed around by the wind, kicked across the room by a careless roommate, and endured countless other harsh conditions. It is certainly well-loved, and therefore has its share of battle scars.

But despite its well-worn appearance, it still invited this commentary:

Friend: "Is that a Moleskine?"
Me: "Yes."
Friend: "CLASSY!!"

Buy one. You will never want to put it down. You will find yourself panicking if you think for a moment you've misplaced it. It will become a little paper extension of your mind. Very useful, very functional, and VERY classy.

5 out of 5 stars Functional and Nice to Use   March 26, 2008

While on a East coast work assignment, I needed a pocket type notebook to take notes on my "off time/tourist time". The hardback moleskine was just the ticket. I'm a pencil writer and because of the hardback and the elastic band the pages do not run together and smudge. The small size was perfect for my small purse. The paper texture is just right and I can stash loose notes in the pocket.

Fast forward a couple weeks and my Franklin planner gave up the ghost. It was an easy choice to opt for the larger size diary. It looks sharp going into meetings -- a couple people have commented on it. Best yet, it is lighter than the Frankin and smaller (which is imporant when travelling and commuting), frees up space in my briefcase should I need to even bring it. And -- best of all, my diary pages will take up much less end of year space than those danged Fanklin archiv binders. In 09, I might opt for the pocket weekly planner to go with it. The space savings (in my line of work I must keep my daily schedules and diaries) will be fantastic.
