5 out of 5 stars Great Little Pens   January 24, 2010
Average Brother (Ellicott City, Maryland United States)
About five or aix years ago I walked into a shop that specialized in writing instruments. On the store counter were two pen holders, one filed with ballpoint pens, the other with lead pencils. The cashier told me that the pens and pencils were Caran d'Ache, that they had recieved a special shipment, and that they were selling them for five dollars a piece. At the time, five dollars was about the price of the cartridge alone. I bought two pens and two pencils, a twenty dollar splurge. The pens write very, very smoothly and have have nver skipped. They look cheap (because the design is simple and the colors are silly), but they are very well made. The look belies the thickness and weight of the metal body, the pen has a good, balanced feel in the hand. I still have all four pieces and the mechanisms are solid have never failed in any way. The only drawback is that eventually the cartridges will go empty (they have never dried out) and I have finally had to buy ink refills. The refills now cost more than the original cost of the pen. The pens are kept in my laptop bag, so they are with me whereever I go. I have never regretted the purchase.

5 out of 5 stars Caran d'Ache: a fine writing instrument need not be costly.   July 23, 2009

There are pens, and then there are writing instruments. A good writing instrument can be a pen, but is has a precision feel when in use, unquestioned reliability, and is designed for many years of use.

The Caran d'Ache White Ballpoint Pen falls into that later category, for it's far more than just another ballpoint pen. It's completely crafted in Switzerland, and from the moment that one picks it up, one notices the craftsmanship.

My first Caran d'Ache writing instrument was identical to this one, except that it was sterling silver plated and had a corporate logo engraved on the barrel. It was a Caran d'Ache Ecridor Chevron Silver Plated Ballpoint Pen, received as a sales award from a Swiss company that was my employer at the time, and over twenty-five years and numerous refills later I still have it.

Caran d'Ache makes a number of different models, and these feature a classic hexagonal design, solid construction and long-term reliability. It is a classic in the real sense of the word. This Caran d'Ache has a Goliath ballpoint cartridge, and features a steel point containing a free-turning ball in tungsten carbide that provides a clean blot-free line, with ink that doesn't smear. It's said to deliver up to 600 pages of handwriting... I can't refute that claim.

Must admit that over the years this Caran d'Ache writing instrument has grown in personal and sentimental value to me. For that reason, I retired my silver one from daily use a few year ago, but along with the white barreled one have added a couple of additional everyday workhorse models:

*Caran d'Ache Metal Collection Original 849 Ballpoint Pen
*Caran d'Ache Black Ballpoint Pen

There's no noticeable difference in quality of construction and overall feel between these models and the silver-finished Ecridor series. And the best part is that they all share the same Goliath ballpoint cartridge as noted above, making it easy to standardize.

The same Swiss-made craftsmanship is there in any of these models. Caran d'Ache is keeping the art of writing alive and well with each of these 5-star writing instruments.
