A good pen February 27, 2010 C. A. Walker These pens are really good. I have a couple of really expensive ones but these do the trick at home or in the car and even at the office. For some reason this type of pen makes me slow down a little, with others my writing is unreadable.
I will never buy a high priced alternative again. January 18, 2010 Pixelsicle (East Bay, CA) Having bought a couple of high-end fountain pens in the past only to be let down no matter how much I took care of them, I was thrilled to find this disposable alternative. I will never bother buying $150+ fountain pens again unless they are vintage proven performers.
Personally, I am pen obsessed person, always looking out for the next great one, but often disappointed, this pen was PERFECT. I hope they never stop making them, which sadly, has been the case for so many of my other favorites.
Use good paper, it really only costs about 25-40% more but it is well worth it! You'll wonder why you ever wrote on cheap garbage before.
A great fountain pen for the price December 31, 2009 E. Jackson (Utah) People who enjoy writing for the sake of writing often gravitate toward fountain pens. Their initial cost can be a bit high, so the Pilot Varsity is an ideal starter pen. You have a chance to try out fountain pens for just a few bucks.
It's a smooth, easy writer, and then ink lasts quite a bit longer than you'd expect. It writes fairly wet, but the ink dries quickly, so that smudging isn't a problem. It's very lightweight, which may appeal to some, but I'd like a bit heavier barrel. The barrel style is not particularly memorable, but again, it's an entry level pen. If you own more expensive fountain pens, you may also be hesitant to loan them out to friends. But with a Pilot Varsity, you can let a friend try one. Pretty soon, they may be hooked on fountain pens too. When you're ready to move up a bit, but not spend too much more, try the Pilot Knight, also sold by Amazon.
A great find November 2, 2009 P. Weber (Ne w York) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Definitely worth a try. I'm left handed and a fountain pen forces me to write slowly. The steel nibs on these disposables stay smooth and the pen writes well as long as you use it with an easy hand. And they don't leak when taken on a plane. I wound up giving away 4 from the first box to friends.
Very convenient but a scratchy writer September 28, 2009 Leo Franklin (New York, NY) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
My primary reason to use a fountain pen over a ball/roller point is the smoothness offered. I was looking for something that would offer the benefits of one without having to deal with the hassle of refilling from a bottle and the possible leaks in most (even high-end) fountain pens. This Pilot Varsity disposable pen with a sealed barrel seemed like the optimal solution, so I decided to try it out.
Here are my observations:
(1) Clean fountain pen: I love the convenience of not having to fill it with ink (although, it can be done - just google for 'pilot varsity refill')
(2) Weight: the pen is very light, this may or may not be an advantage, it was good for me since I plan on carrying this pen with me at all times. I usually keep a heavier pen at my desk as I find that helps with not having to apply any pressure while writing
(3) The price is right: as a pen I hope to carry around often I won't feel bad if I lose or permanently 'lend' it to someone; also most refilling inks cost a lot more!
(4) Nib/writing: although the ink flow itself is consistent and smooth (as other users have also observed), the writing is anything but - it is a scratchy writer at best! The nib is marked M (for Medium) but is writes more like a fine point. Coming from a ballpoint/BIC pen this may still feel great to you but if you've used a real fountain pen you'll know what I mean.
(5) Ink: the ink is a nice blunt, dark black that does a decent job even on bad paper, although it does show though on the other side of the page on most ordinary paper (which is what I use for writing). So, you'll need thick, good quality paper if you want to write on both sides.
Summarizing, the underwhelming writing performance meant this isn't the pen for me, this is not surprising considering the price point. However, if you really like a thin line to write (or even draw with), then this pen should be fine for you.
I suggest going to your local crafts or office supply store and buying a single pen (which is what I did) before investing in a multi-pack here at Amazon. I will be trying out a few other pens to find out what works best for me, you can look those up in my "See all my reviews" link above.
