Warning: Fantastic Product But Ink Can Disappear June 16, 2010 clwguy (FL) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This pen is incredible but unfortunately there is a major flaw which makes the pen pretty much useless.
Numerous times things I have written using this pen have gone blank. This problem is caused by heat.
So if you leave something you've written in the car and it's over 80 degrees (exact temperature
unknown but it only needs to get slightly hot)... poof, voila... ink has disappeared.
My mother lost her whole address book because the ink went invisible. I wrote a check for the tax department
and it went blank.
Like it said, it's really too bad because these are fantastic if it weren't for that problem
FriXion pen June 14, 2010 Rocket J (Allegany Hardwoods, NY) Great pen. Went all over locally to find replacements with no luck. Found it here with decent price. The pen is great with the one exception everybody notes - it runs out of ink very quickly. I write a lot (technical consultant and author) and always begin a piece by hand. I need a pen that is smooth yet dark. This is it! The cost is not important in my work. Environmentally, I wish Pilot would make a refill and make the body of the pen reusable - this disposable model is a real waste and only points out the lack of sensitivity to real world issues at Pilot corporate headquarters.
Be forwarned when summertime arrives..... June 2, 2010 Peter Venkman, PhD 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
I initially loved this pen (and it's companion highlighter). Make a mistake and a little rubby rubby and viola! Gone.
Problem is, when my notebook was left in the car on a hot day, nearly half of the notes were gone. Oh my!
This pen uses a heat sensitive ink. The action of rubbing the back of the pen on the mistake generates heat. The heat makes the ink disappear. If you live in a place that gets warm and your notes are in a hot place i.e. a locked car then caveat--notes will go away.
So keep it away from hair dryers, heaters, light bulbs, ovens, or any other heat producing objects.
Other than that, oh wait, the solvent in the ink smells a bit funny. And whatever you do, DO NOT USE THIS PEN TO WRITE A CHECK!!!!!!
That is all.
for Crossword Fans February 27, 2010 grambeau I am on my second box of these pens since everyone likes them. I bought them for use in doing my crossword puzzles since I need to erase a lot. On Computer paper they erase completely with no messy smudges.
Great pens, short life; similar to other reviewers December 20, 2009 H. S. Pope (Richmond, VA) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I began purchasing these pens (red, blue & black) a few months ago for my staff and they love them. We do a lot of handwritten documentation and the erasable pen is a major improvement over white-out. Our documents turn out much neater than before and we experience less hand cramping (due to starting something over completely after a non-erasable mistake). The friction design works well and, in most cases, removes all signs of ink on the paper, unlike other erasable pens or even pencil, sometimes.
The ink color on the paper is not as crisp (appears slightly faded) as other pens by Pilot (i.e. rollerball, felt tip). For us, this is an acceptable drawback for the convenience of an erasable pen in most situations. This may be a function of the design of the ball point (not fine or ultra fine) and ink-type, which make the ink easier to erase. We do have a supply of standard rollerball or other pens that we use in certain situations, when needed.
As for longevity, these pens score pretty low. We go through a box of these pens (12 pens) in half the time (if not less) as we did other pens in the past.
Pros:
-Extremely convenient
-Ink virtually (or literally) disappears from the paper, only a minimal trace in some cases
Cons:
-short life
-great concept; poor design
-graphics are childish
-shape is inconsistent with better quality pens, like rollerballs
-Why isn't eraser on cap?! You have to remove the cap from the end of the pen when you need to erase.
We will continue to buy these pens due to their convenience, but will continue hope for design improvements or competition to address the ink and physical design problems.
