Pen may be great, but buy it local. December 27, 2009 N. Parish 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
The $.89 price of these pens disguises the expensive shipping. They must send them each individually, because on an order of 10 Amazon wanted $38.90 in shipping.
a disappointment October 13, 2009 Samwell (TX) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
This product is really just mediocre. It's comparable to a really crappy real fountain pen. I don't understand why so many people like this pen so much. Either all of these people just work for Pilot pens, or none of them have used a nice pen.
First of all, medium point is quite broad, and they only make this size. Secondly, the line isn't fine at all. Lastly, the nib isn't very smooth.
I purchased this pen out of curiosity and I can definitely recommend looking elsewhere if you are wanting a fountain pen. For a more economical deal, and really nice pen I would recommend something like the Lamy Safari, $23 on Amazon. Also, it is greener too, since you are just refilling instead of throwing them away once they run out of ink. Calli and noodler's are both very nice waterproof inks.
Great price to quality ratio October 6, 2009 Mr. Ben (mid-michigan) I have been testing the waters of fountain pens, since I've taken to writing more. The Varsity is a great disposable pen that makes me want to get a reusable fountain pen. I had no idea how easy it is to write with a fountain pen- even compared to Pilots Precision V5 and V7 pens. Practically no pressure on the paper and this baby flies over pages- which is great since my hand and wrist tire easily.
I write on cheap spiral bound notebook paper and the ink does seem to soak in a bit, making it a little hard to write on both sides of the paper, and it does seem to feather some (a trait of relatively inexpensive ink, i believe), but those are acceptable in a fountain pen that costs so little. I have not had any issues writing on uneven surfaces, it performed quite well when I was writing on my notebook in my lap on a train ride- though the liquid ink obviously precludes writing while I'm reclined in bed or upside down (you know, when the mood strikes). Even when I get a reusable fountain pen or two, i will still have some of these around as they are expendable and shareable.
Wonderful July 16, 2009 K. Nissley (Kansas) I love this pen. It's so nice when I have 200+ letters to sign. It writes so smoothly and doesn't leave you with ink all over your hands.
What's all the fuss about fountain pens? June 14, 2009 . (San Francisco, CA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I've been looking at different pens to see which writes the best for me. I've looked at ballpoint, rollerball, gel, and now fountain pens. I thought a good fountain pen would cost a lot, so I bought two Varsity's to test out fountain pens first. While I do like the way that fountain pens flow on the page, without much pressure, I don't understand what all of the fuss is about. For example, since the pen and ink rely a lot on gravity, the page needs to be flat on a table or else the pen will not write evenly. How many of us have the time to write at a table or on a flat surface? In the car, on the train, a tablet that has seen better days -- that's the norm now. That's why the fountain pen was replaced by the ballpoint. I love the way my my Parker retractable pens write (Jotter and Sonnet) with Gel refills.
However, the Varsity writes well for a fountain pen and seems well-built. I'm not worried about the thing leaking in my pocket. However, depending upon the paper, the ink soaks into the paper and may not be as crisp as an oil based ink (eg, ballpoint). Still, I may give a quality fountain pen another chance using Noodler's ink. Perhaps a Pilot-Namiki Vanishing Point or a Parker. I understand EF may give a more pleasing line than the M that I tried for the Pilot Varsity.
I welcome comments to this point, or even advice, and will check them regularly.
