Great Pen for the Price March 3, 2010 A. Holzschuh (California) After falling in love with a fountain pen a friend gave me I wanted to buy some more. I decided on the Lamy Safari, I read many reviews stating how great the pen is and I liked the bright color.
The packaging is pretty basic, with just the pen and a warranty card. The pen itself is a little light(weight) for my tastes, but overall it is solid. The width and grip are very nice feeling in my hand. I also like the cap, clip, and ink window, they are nice touches that give the pen lots of character. I went with "fine" nib out of the blue because I had mostly used medium nib pens and on cheap paper I noticed lots of feathering. Upon writing I found the tip to be very scratchy, rather than smooth. After a few days of waiting the Z24 converter came in the mail so I could fill it with my own ink. I have to say my ink makes the pen flow MUCH better than the stuff included with the cartridge(I used Noodler's Polar Blue).
Pros:
Inexpensive
Looks great
Nice stroke
Good flow(with better ink)
Comfortable Grip
Cons:
Too light
I really wish it came with a Z24 ink converter, cartridges suck and are really wasteful
A bit scratchy with included ink
If you want a quality pen for little money I recommend this pen enthusiastically, just buy a bottle of ink and an ink converter.
A great first fountain pen January 1, 2010 Kim D. Mason (Adelaide, South Australia) This is my first fountain pen, and I've been very pleasantly surprised. It's very smooth, I really like the simplicity of the design, and it's very light, which I prefer. The line is consistent, and it rarely seems to skip (I won't say never, as it has skipped slightly a couple of times for me; perhaps this will go away with more use). A note on skipping: I'm left-handed, and Lamy do make a 'left handed' nib; perhaps that would serve me better.
I bought the fine nib, which seems to give a line of similar size to 'medium' gel pens.
The pen writes better than any gel or rollerball pen I've tried. The only smoother pen I've tried is the Uniball Signo 207, which takes way too long to dry for my taste.
Great Value November 20, 2009 Tony Belding (Hamilton, TX United States) I've got two of these: a yellow one (which is a great, bold color) with a M nib, and a red one with a F nib. I had only a slight problem with the yellow one, as the seal where the cartridge or converter attaches was not fully airtight -- which I eventually solved by cementing a converter permanently into place there. Aside from that, both pens have worked well. When it comes to actual writing performance, there's little (if any) difference between these Safaris and fancy, expensive pens.
Lamy has done a great job of producing an inexpensive pen without compromising the functionality or making it ugly. My only caveat is, you need to get the converter! You'll find you have a much better selection of inks available (including waterproof Noodler's Black, my all-around favorite) and you'll save money. Cartridges are really quite costly for the tiny amount of ink in each one.
Great for Everyday Use February 25, 2009 J. Marks (Reno, NV) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I was given one of these pens as a gift about five years ago and I'm still using it. I don't think you'll be able to find another fountain pen for the price that will write nearly as well as this pen does. I actually just ordered my second LAMY pen and a z24 converter because this product has lasted me so long and has been very forgiving to occasional mistreatment. I would recommend this pen to anyone looking to get a first fountain pen or really anyone looking for a good writing instrument that won't break the bank.
excellent. October 7, 2008 Mass Consumer (Berkeley, CA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is my first fountain pen, and I haven't had it long. That said, it works excellently for my purposes, much better than what I've used before (very inky black rollerball varieties).
I use it for everyday writing of all sorts, and in particular for taking notes. I take notes and do work in maths and humanities on the back sides of once-used 8.5"x11" paper, which gives me a lot of room to write big, which I find requires less effort. The fine nib suits this purpose well. I think the medium is a bit too big for me to write neatly enough since I tend to scrunch my letters. The extra fine would work very well too, perhaps even better.
Don't bother with the cartridges. Get the adapter. I've only tried one kind of ink (Parker Quink Black) and it is perfect for me -- dries almost instantaneously on plain white printer paper, leaving good definition.
Additions:
1. Get the extra fine.
2. Tip: buy a tiny jar of Carmex, scoop out the petroleum, and use for portable refilling.
