4 out of 5 stars A Great First Fountain Pen   March 17, 2010
Richard Niewiroski Jr. (Pasadena, CA USA)
I bought this pen because I wanted to see if I could get accustom to writing with a fountain pen. I originally purchased it with an extra fine nib, but also bought a fine nib for it as well. I found the extra fine nib to produce a width that I really love, but it seemed to be somewhat scratchy on most paper. The fine nib was a little wide for my taste, but it did write and feel very smooth. The pen itself is very nice. It felt good in my hand and the weight was nice. There's simply a lot of value to be had here. If I had one complaint about this pen, it's the design. I understand it's suppose it's suppose to look a little more modern than most pens, but it's just not an attractive pen to me. If that's something you can look past or if you do like the look of this pen, then you're gonna get a lot of pen for your money here. I liked the pen so much, in fact, that I almost immediately went out and bought a Lamy Studio Steel Fountain Pen.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Fountain Pen   November 21, 2009

I have used Fountain Pens for years, and have always believed that quality pens should be affordable. I am very pleased with the quality of the Lamy Al-Star pen... the writing is smooth, the ink catridge (extra) holds a sufficient (rather plentiful actually) amount of ink, and the components of the pen fit nicely together. This last item is a point of contention I have had with a number of the various brands I have used throughout the years, for each time I would refill the ink, the structure of the pen would seem to lossen around the screw-point... not so with the Lamy.

If you like fountain pens and want a pen that is quality made without the price being such that you'd feel you need to handcuff it to your wrist, then this is the pen for you.

5 out of 5 stars Great price, great pen   February 4, 2009

This is a great value for the price. I was initially concerned about the size (it's fairly "fat" and I have small hands), but the pen fits nicely in my hand and writes smoothly. I plan to purchase another one so I can write with different ink colors.
