1 out of 5 stars Basically unusable   August 23, 2010
Older and maybe wiser
I have used other Waterman pens for several years. This was the first one I bought that I had to return. The pen had to be positioned in exactly one position or it did not produce a proper width stroke. It was basically unusable. All my other Watermans do not have this problem. They are more expensive but I assume that it is not strictly price dependent. Perhaps I just received a poorly manufactured one. I will be reordering to see if another one works properly.

4 out of 5 stars Last's A Lifetime   July 12, 2010

I bought this pen in a kit about 8 years ago. I have never had a problem. This pen writes beautifully and the ink flows well. It is very expensive looking, yet is pretty economical. I wouldn't hesitate to buy another in a minute. I may buy my kids one as a gift.

4 out of 5 stars Good value for the money   June 14, 2010

I bought this pen to replace my favorite pen, a Waterman Charleston, that I accidentally left at an airport security checkpoint. The Phineas was half the price of my Charleston (in case I have another senior moment), and performs well for the money. The steel nib flows well, although I much preferred the smoother flow of the Charleston's gold nib. I also don't care for the snap-on cap (my previous experience suggests that it will eventually wear out and the cap won't stay on) - I much preferred the Charleston's screw-on cap. But other than these minor faults, I am very happy with this pen. I fully expect it to become my workhorse. I am still using the blue ink cartridge that came with the pen, but I expect I will switch to the plunger and begin using my stock of Waterman black when this runs out.

5 out of 5 stars Spectacularly good low-priced pen   May 24, 2010

I have been extraordinarily pleased with this pen. It writes incredibly smoothly with just the right amount of ink flow. While that is to be expected from a pen selling for four times the amount of this one, it is rare -- very rare -- to achieve it in one of this level. Moreover, it quite attractive. I could not be more pleased with it.

3 out of 5 stars Looks nice, quality is nothing special   April 5, 2010

I have a Sheaffer which I got for half the price, and that actually works a little better. This Waterman doesn't quite flow as well.

Waterman added a metal tube to the inside, but it's just a tube they dropped in (and maybe glued?); the metal tube is not part of the pen's general structure. Most of it is plastic, including all screw threads.

The pocket clip looks like it is supposed to taper down and level off with the curve of the cap, but it sticks out a little. Not bad, but it could be better.

The gold band near the back end comes about 1mm short of reaching all the way around, so there is a little gap that looks cheap.

Waterman's ink is crummy ("black" is not very dark), and the inside of the pen is just barely too narrow to use standard bullet-shaped ink refills.

It has a nice general appearance, as long as you don't look too close. I got mine for a very steep discount because this series is actually discontinued, so I am glad to have it. But I think Waterman's regular price is kind of high, and the fountain pen tip is not the best.
