| Customer Reviews: A pen with a fine balance and a smooth line. February 9, 2010 R. J. Reid (Texas, USA) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
Waterman makes a cheaper model of a medium point fountain pen, which I bought at Office Depot ten years ago. It's a bit fatter for people who prefer pens of this shape, and I still use it, but the plastic casing begins to show wear after a bit of use, and old plastic is not pretty. I am sure that the Harmonie will retain its sleek black glossiness for a good long while, and I think that the tip glides a bit more smoothly as you write. The pocket clasp is much more attractive. I'm glad I got this Waterman for my collection. It's interesting that the box it comes in is identical to the box that held the first Waterman I bought ten years ago.

Even though my hands are on a keyboard much of the time, I still love pens and have a few long-time favorites. This Waterman Harmonie Gold Fountain Pen - Black, Medium Nib 49803 is the one I reach for most. My husband won it in a contest several years ago and (under my scrutiny and influence) wisely gave it to me. Mine is a deep marbled blue-grey rather than the black pictured, with gold bands and clip. It's simply beautiful.
But the real beauty of a good pen is the way it feels in your hand. This one is slender for a fountain pen and perfectly balanced, warm and a little weighty, comfortable to hold. The gold nib has just the right flex whether I'm whispering secrets onto the page or bearing down a little for emphasis. I have a supply of cartridges, simple and neat to use, but it's a lot more fun to stick the little plunger into a bottle of good blue-black ink and draw it up. Slurp!
I like to have a few nice pens and choose the one that suits my mood; no display cases for me. The mug on my kitchen counter has some favorite roller-balls and fine felt-tips, but a fountain pen is special. It seems to me that it makes my words smoother and more graceful. I wouldn't say a fountain pen is for everyone but if you use one (or want to), this Waterman Harmonie is a very elegant choice.
