5 out of 5 stars A brilliant pen for about $30   December 22, 2007

This is a wonderful pen at any price; at about $30 it is unmatched. It would make a lovely gift for someone (or oneself!) who is interested in fountain pens, but for whom an expensive pen makes no sense. I've used Parkers, Sheaffers, Skilcrafts and the Pilot Varsity (disposable) in the <$50 range and the look and feel of this pen is unmatched.

And that's to say nothing of how it writes! Although the "Fine" nib is more like a "Medium" from other manufacturers, it is incredibly smooth, lays down a wonderful line and allows a trouble-free flow of ink. I've had no problems with dirty fingers or sloppy lines (unlike my Sheaffer) and the available converter means that you can use any ink you like without having to find T10 cartridges.

The only drawback might be the size of the pen. The body of the pen has a rather large diameter and the cap is downright huge. This might be a concern if you intend to put it in a shirt pocket. The grip area is smaller, however, so the pen doesn't feel in any way large when in use.

I used mine as my daily writer for about two months before resigning it to "signature" duty when I picked up a Pilot "Vanishing Point" pen with a finer nib. The finer nib is simply more suited to my handwriting style in day-to-day use.

Then I lost my Lamy. At $30, this isn't the heartbreaking loss that a Mont Blanc or a Namiki would have been--and I'm not sure the more expensive pen would actually write better.

I'm replacing it with another AL-Star. Only this time it will have an extra fine nib so that I can use it every day.
