Just in case you're confused: The Lamy Al-Star is the same pen as the Safari Vista and Safari- the only difference between the models is the material out of which the body is made- the Al-Star is aluminum, the Vista clear ABS Plastic, and the Safari various colors of ABS Plastic. The reviews you read for the Safari apply to the Al-Star, if you're looking for a bit more info.
I personally own an Al-Star, opting for it over the Safari because I wanted a fountain pen that was as rugged as possible. And I made the right choice- it's a wonderful pen. In the end, I'm not sure what else to say! I have an extra-fine point, and it is incredibly sharp. No need to write slowly.
I definitely recommend getting the converter- eventually you'll find that cartridges are a waste of money, and that the best inks around seem to be bottle-only. Don't worry- filling from a bottle isn't a messy ordeal in the least.
Bottom line: great pen! Great for a beginner, or for an existing FP user who wants something more practical than show-off.
